Del's in the process of releasing a new book of poetry. We're sure you're going to love it so much you'll need at least two! Meanwhile, enjoy the below excerpt from the book.

Old Cowboys

I just love old cowboys, and hope to be one someday.
Though my body may grow fragile,
and my hair may turn to gray.

I suppose I’ve learned more from old cowboys
than any teach I ever had.
I especially learned a lot from the cowboy I called Dad.

Now the Lord took him home when he was just sixty-two.
But the lessons he passed on to me,
why I’ll practice till I’m through.

Old cowboys just seem to have a lot of sense;
the common type that is.
Things you can really use,
like how to mend a fence.

Uncle Charlie once told me that wisdom don’t come by years.
It’s more from listening and paying attention.
And how much of it you plant between your ears.

Now I don’t mean to steer you wrong,
I’m not putting down other men.
It’s just that for me to live any other way of life
would almost feel like sin.

And it’s not just the tradition of this cowboy life that sets a man apart, but more so what he values and the things he holds in his heart.

So, to this way of life I live and love, I will forever be true.
And when the sun sets low on my final trail,
friend, I hope I’ve passed some of it on to you.

From the chorus lines of oldies such as "Little Joe the Wrangler," "Cool Water “or” Wayward Wind" to his own originals such as "Riding up North to Montana" or "Hard Luck Cowboy," you'll feel every emotion as Del paints the scenes before you with his songs and poetry.  From years of living and experiencing the ranch and rodeo life, this cowboy is able to relate his knowledge and experiences to every audience through his singing, song writing and poetry skills.  Upon hearing Del entertain, you will realize once again, the cowboy breed is still alive and well.

As you follow the trail of Del's schedule you'll see that he is in demand to audiences across the nation. More than just performing, Del is committed to carrying the torch of the western heritage forward as he has done so from the swamps of Florida to the mountains peaks of the Yukon, from the shores of California to the sands of the Atlantic over the past few years.

Anyone familiar with the top trail riding show on satellite television will surly be familiar with Del's career as the featured entertainer on the weekly TV show "Best of America By Horseback" produced by Tom and Pat Seay.  Along with this cowboy's Television career, he was also a regular voice on the world wide internet radio show "World talk Radio."  Despite the wide ranging travels Del experiences, he still makes time for appearance at school functions and senior's assisted living facilities.

A motto Del developed for his shows is “Come As You Are, Prepare To Go Home A Little Bit Western.”  This cowboy entertainer truly hopes to share not only his music and poetry with his audiences, but also a bit of the heritage of the American cowboy.  Because of this, audiences everywhere attest to the fact that “you leave Del’s show feeling as if you heard the bawling of the cattle and saw the setting of the copper colored western sun over the desert mountains.

Del is proud to know that his two albums of western music are being played on radio stations around the country.  Both have found their way on to the western music charts over the last couple years.  The CD titles include, “A Little Bit Western” and “Son of the Prairie Wind.”  These are filled with songs and poetry you’ll want to hear again and again.

Del receives a great deal of support from his wife Shevawn, three grown children, Emily, Kimberly and DJ, and two step children, Hunter and Bryce, as well as a host of other family members and friends.  Del attributes his greatest accomplishments in life as being a child of God and a father to his children.

You can book Del as a solo act or with his band, Del Shields and The Wagon Wheels.   If you want a true cowboy for a true western show, book this entertainer for your next show.  Your audience and you will both be glad you did.
